OK, maybe it IS possible, Kurt. http://www.hostboard.com/forums/ But why would you have one to "start a tempo," then another to actually play the song? :cp The count-in / click & sequence or track should be the same - the tempo matches the tune, because it IS "the tune." But if the drummer hit the wrong tune [other than that which the band was expecting], well...are the tunes in question of the same tempo? [I havent listened to them yet - just readg all the posts.]
But now that I've re-read Klemme's quote, I realize it was from a FANSITE http://www.hostboard.com/forums/ ...they were saying the soundman started the tune, but the drumr gave the "wrong count in." That's messed up, anyway....oh dear, what does the Enquirer have to say about it?! ;c)
The drummer should be in COMPLETE & TOTAL CONTROL of the song playing "machine/rig"...at NO time shouild it be in a soundman's hands [Lord help us all]. THAT is bush in itself. Sounds like "Fansite Music Biz Ignorance" to me. If this IS true, then it qualifies for plain ole Brainfart of the Year / Decade. Someone may not have a gig tomorrow.
When I played in a Top 40 / Dance / Rock / Variety / blah blah band back in the late 80s / early 90's, after the "quitting-slash-firing" of the keybdst, the singing sister of the frontman / lead gtrst would stand at the keyb & start the sequence - BAD move. [It was "their band"...& she couldnt play one note of piano anyway, so now she would fake it - this meant no more keybd frills or solos, just that which was within the existing sequenced form]...At that time, they had a keyb-seq rig that took at least 20-30 secs to load, so at the end of the previous tune i would immed go into the next tune's [on the set list] groove - & she 'hits' the wrong tune...[only 1 bar of quarters count-off the way they had it - I had to figure out what tune it was within a few notes of it starting - kept me on my "Zappa-style" toes]. Good word Fuse. At the sign-off for SNL her voice did sound hoarse. Maybe she and/or her manager were trying to protect her voice and this seemed like a reasonable though not preferable option.
Her voice has probably hoarse from yelling at her manager.
Fuse, I agree. She's just a puppet...a commodity, really. We should be blaming the puppeteers...
